History

Minutemen Staffing was formed by Sam Lucarelli in 1968 with money he saved while working as a beverage distributor.

Rather than investing in a down payment on a house, Sam focused in on a different type of vision - to win clients' loyalty by redefining the term "commitment to service" in the nascent temporary help industry.

Sam's friends still recount how he balanced his full-time job as a driver with the demands of entrepreneurship. He often would coordinate soft drink shipments with plant shift changes just in case a foreman might be caught short-handed on personnel. A quick call back to the dispatch hall, and Minutemen filled out the workforce for the day. It wasn't unusual in those days to see Sam driving workers to client sites in his station wagon or ducking in to a restroom at a fast food restaurant to change into his suit just in time for a sales call.

By the early 1970s, Minutemen Staffing was earning a solid reputation not only for responsiveness to customers, but also for fair treatment of its employees. Many of Cleveland's professional athletes during this period supplemented their off-season incomes by working for the company. Rocky Colavito and Buddy Bell are just a couple of the former Cleveland Indians players who sometimes accompanied Sam on sales and service calls.

In 1972, Minutemen decided to respond to its customers' increasing demand for qualified truck drivers on a temporary, and, eventually, a permanent basis. Transportation Unlimited, Inc. became the first offshoot on what is today known as The Minutemen Human Resource System. Transportation Unlimited and Minutemen grew together steadily over the next two decades, following some of their client firms with national operations out of Ohio – opening offices in Florida, New Orleans and Pittsburgh.

Today, Minutemen Staffing is focused on the Great Lakes region, supporting clients from branch offices in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati.

Harvard University and Inc. magazine have recognized The Minutemen Human Resource System as one of the top 100 American companies headquartered in an inner-city neighborhood. Locally, Minutemen has been named on multiple occasions to Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead 100 list of fast-growing companies, and has been inducted into CWRU's Family Business Hall of Fame.
